How To Have A Whale Of A Time – Beach Riding Tips

The ocean has a great deal to teach us. And if you’ve found yourself growing up by the tropical bay, you know the power of the meditative calm that the waves bring. And must you choose to engage in some beach riding this weekend to get away from the indoor galore, here’s what we predict in store for you!

The pumping workout you get from constantly pushing the pedals maneuver you through nostalgic memories. The smell of salt sprays in the air reminds you of how the beach would work its magic into making you run slower. Of how the soft sands would cushion your clumsy falls. Most importantly- to never lose sight of your belongings, especially your sandals!

Some peachy tips for your beach riding trips:

Fat bikes make for great beach bikes. They are meant to cruise across off-road terrain – like the warm sands of the beach. These bikes are great for more local trails.

Beach riding safety for your e-bike

Beach trips are always followed by traces of sand in unexpected places! But be sure to clean your e-bike from any sand or seawater traces after your ride. Make a note to avoid using direct water pressure, such as from a hose. Direct water pressure may just spread the accumulated sand and seawater to other parts of your electric bike.

Sway it, don’t spray it!

Sway away from collected saltwater or any still water.  Keep away from those high tides too, you don’t want to lose control and damage your e-bike.

Sunscreen for you, lubrication for your chain

Be sure to lubricate your electric bike chains well before you ride, to ensure that it is dry. Your e-bike chain maintenance is important to avoid any unwanted sand buildup.

Escape stress and turn down the pressure

For your fat bikes, we recommend that you maintain your tire psi between 8 – 12 on the soft sands. Lowering your tire pressure helps to get your e-bike rolling easier on the sandy terrain.

Take it easy, or play it rough?

What’s the most ideal way to enjoy your beach riding experience? Wet sand is more compact and easy to ride on. Soft and loose sand tends to make it harder to maneuver through. To have a breezier ride, we suggest that you ride a little closer to the shoreline. It also takes up a lot more of your energy to pedal across further up the shore. Make sure you’re not too close to the water, especially on high tide days.

If you’ve planned fun beach activities, such as a picnic, or building a sand castle for your trip, don’t ignore these tips:

Beach safety tips for you

  • Carry your sunblock and an umbrella. You’re probably not expecting any rains but an umbrella protects you from the blazing sun.

  • Do not swim too close to the rocks. The current is unpredictable, and you may face dangers of hitting the rocks.
  • Face the waves- don’t hold your back against them. This is to ensure that no wave catches you off guard.
  • Swim in close vicinity to lifeguards! This tip could literally save your life.
  • Two for company, three’s a party! Do not venture out into isolated waters. Have a friend or two accompany you to enjoy your breezy beach riding trips. There’s plenty of fun beach activities to do when you’ve got people around you.
